Simpson's opened in their original location at the intersection of Highways 160 and 19 in September, 1964. Gary Simpson signed on with General Electric to sell GE appliances on September 16, 1964 and they have been a dealer for GE appliances since then. At the time they opened, Sol Simpson worked as a carpenter and Gary worked as an electrician and plumber. Heating and air conditioning services were added later.

The store was moved to the current location at Highway 160 and Carhart Street in 1972 and they became a True-Value store in 1976. Simpson's was one of the original five locations that distributed the Alton Advertiser when publication began in 1996. They are the only one of the five businesses that is still in operation under the same name and management.

There are currently three generations of Simpsons working in the store: Gary and Deane, daughter Holly, son Keith, and grandson Nathan. They have one other employee at this time, Missy.

Every Thursday is Popcorn Thursday with free popcorn for all customers. Three True-Value Bargains of the Month are offered each month. These are usually around half off the regular price.
